In early 2023, the purchase of Evernote was completed by Bending Spoons https://bendingspoons.com/ an Italian tech company focused on AI with several products shown on its website, but strangely Evernote is not shown as one of its products. Bending Spoons seems more focused on video editing, AI powered photo enhancement, and personal fitness apps as examples.
Evernote has a very large customer base, reportedly over 200 million but seems to be slow to offer newer features as other note taking apps. Fairly large price increases are beginning to appear as people renew the app. Evernote’s proprietary format for it’s notes makes it more difficult to “escape”, but there are work arounds if you want to move on.
In the last month, a new importer has become available as a community plug-in on Obsidian, a very popular note taking app. https://obsidian.md/ . To move notes from Evernote into Obsidian, use Evernote’s export feature by selecting the notes you want to move, and then choose Export Note (from File Menu). The notes will be exported into “.enex” format. You are limited to export of 100 notes at the time currently. Name and save the export to your desktop or other folder of your choice.
With Obsidian open, download the Evernote Importer plug-in if you have not already, then launch it. Select the Evernote export file (.enex) and import the documents into a location/folder in Obsidian. The notes will be imported in the standard format as a markdown file which is easily read by any text editor or word processor. It appears that images come across with the note text. Tags come too.
This importer has only just been released (July 2023) and will probably see enhancements. It works as advertised and is very fast to convert and import your notes.
I am working to convert all my Evernote files and am moving them to Obsidian for files that I use for PKM (personal knowledge management). For files that are what I deem as reference or archival such as important receipts, warranties, manuals, travel ideas, medical records, and so on, I import to Apple Notes. Like Obsidian, Notes can also import “enex” format files. You have an Apple Note for each Evernote Note with text and images and importantly, tags are retained. The imported files are automatically moved into an Imported Notes file. Create another folder with an appropriate name and move them from the import folder. Again, the conversion is quick, requiring only a few seconds to convert 100 notes.
I think I will be pleased with the change that I am making even though I have been an Evernote user since 2009. The management and ownership changes over the years has been a drag on Evernote. That with some glitchy releases and slow responses finally pushed me to do this.
