Tips and Techniques #15

This month we’ll look at popular apps for IOS, “Tips”, email hazards and a major Evernote update.

These apps vary regarding whether they work on iOS, Android and desktops.

  • Textexpander  https://textexpander.com – very handy if you have to repeatedly type text boilerplate. It will do it for you in a few keystrokes.
  • Priv Note https://privnote.com you can send notes that will self-destruct after sending. I’ll let it up to your imagination as to how you would use it.
  • Apple Translate – go to the App Store on iOS or get it with iOS 14. Up to 14 languages so far. Type in a phrase and get instant translation text and voice pronunciation
  • Facebook Analytics
  • Night Sky

Email –

As we all know, you can’t be too careful when opening emails and/or attachments from people or companies you don’t know.  Social media messages are another area of concern when it comes to phishing, and LinkedIn phishing messages dominate as the top social media email subject to watch out for, holding the number one spot at 47%.

During this pandemic, malicious hackers preying on users’ biggest weak points by sending messages that instill fear, uncertainty and doubt.  Coronavirus-related subject lines have remained their most promising attack type, as pandemic conditions weaken judgment, and lead to potentially detrimental clicks.

Here’s a list of common subject lines from spoofing/phishing emails that might catch us off guard.

Evernote

The desktop version which is Evernote’s workhorse has released a much upgraded new version 10.

Welcome to the new Evernote for Mac and Windows! We’ve rebuilt the app from the ground up to make it easier for you to create notes quickly, customize them however you like, and find information in an instant.

Editor

– You now have more control over the appearance of your notes. Use semantic headers and tables to give structure to your notes. Or change fonts, colors, and highlights to add a personal touch.

– Checklists now get the VIP treatment they deserve. You can indent items, drag-and-drop to reorder them, and enjoy the satisfaction of crossing them off with a single click.

– Adding rich content—like audio, photos, attachments, and sketches—is quicker and easier with the new, multi-function Insert button.

– We redesigned the formatting toolbar to put the most popular options front and center. Bold/italic/underline, header level, font sizes and colors, multiple highlighter options, subscript/superscript, alignment, hyperlinking, and more—all right there at your fingertips.

Search

– Save time—and keystrokes. Get real-time search suggestions as you type to find what you need faster.

– Filter your searches by tag, attachment, PDF, URL, and more. So even the most elusive notes will now appear at your command.

– Make searching your Evernote superpower. Combine keywords, tags, or locations to find exactly what you need, then save those searches and use them over and over again with just one click.

UI

– The main screen has a cleaner, more modern look that’s consistent across all your devices. So it’s easier on the eyes—and easier for you to get stuff done.

– You can now change the default width of your notes. Choose Optimize Readability for a more focused view, or Fit To Window for maximum information on-screen. It’s your call.

Foundation

– This update moves the app to a new codebase that’s more stable and reliable, for fewer hang/crash errors.

– That new codebase means we can fix bugs quicker and release new features more often (yep, we’ve got some cool things already in development—join our Beta Program for a sneak peek!).

– Syncing data across different platforms and devices is smoother and more seamless than before.

This is a big update that we’re really proud of—and it’s just the start. We’re going to keep working hard, releasing updates, and finding new ways to simplify your life.

Poached Salmon with Hollandaise over Swiss Chard

Total Time: 25 minutes Serves: 4

  • 1 stick plus 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon fresh orange juice, plus zest from ½ an orange
  • 4 lemon wedges plus 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 egg yolks
  • Pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon plus ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 10 black peppercorns plus a pinch of freshly ground black pepper
  • 4½ cups water
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • ¼ cup white wine vinegar
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 4 (6-ounce) salmon fillets, skinned and deboned
  • 1 pound Swiss chard, ribs and stems removed, leaves roughly torn

1. Make orange hollandaise: Melt 1 stick butter in a small pot over medium-low heat. In a blender or food processor, blend orange juice and zest, lemon juice, egg yolks, cayenne, ½ teaspoon salt and ground black pepper until combined. With motor running, slowly pour melted butter into blender and continue to process until sauce emulsifies and thickens. Add more salt or lemon juice if needed. Set sauce aside.

2. Add the following to a large lidded pot: 4 cups water, wine, vinegar, whole peppercorns, 1 tablespoon salt and bay leaves. Set a steamer into pot, making sure not to let steamer touch water. Bring liquid to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce heat to low, then carefully lay salmon into steamer. Cover pot and steam salmon until it flakes and just cooks through, about 7 minutes. Remove fillets from steamer and set aside.

3. Meanwhile, add ½ cup water and remaining butter to a large sauté pan over medium heat and bring to a simmer. Add Swiss chard leaves and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes. Season with salt.

4. To serve, divide Swiss chard among 4 warmed plates. Place one salmon fillet over each portion and drizzle orange hollandaise over top. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

Bon Appetite
