What follows is a basic recipe to give you an idea of what a grain bowl might look like. Where to go from there is enormously varied as you can use all kinds of combinations of vegetables, proteins, fruits, grains, seeds, and nuts.
Ingredients:
Mixed greens like beet tops, arugula, spinach, dandelions, romaine, butter lettuce and so on.
Other vegetables: avocado, butternut squash, artichokes, cooked or raw, corn kernels, cucumbers…
Radishes, green onions, red onions, mushrooms, peas, edamame, sesame seeds, black beans, red beans…
Grains like Millet, Brown Rice, Israeli couscous, Quinoa, Farro, Wheat Berries, Wild Rice, Buckwheat Groats…
Proteins: Shrimp, Chicken, Beef, Tempeh, Sushi Grade Tuna or Salmon…
Cook the vegetables and proteins that need cooking and combine the items in a bowl. Have a pocket of greens here, a serving of grains there, some fruit on the side and protein on top. Don’t stir/mix the items, just arrange in the bowl next to each other. Serve while the grains or proteins are still warm.
The dish is very eye appealing, and you can mix up items depending on what’s in the pantry.
