By now you have been reading about and probably tried the AI (artificial intelligence) products, Chat GPT, Bard and a host of others. Google and Microsoft have jumped into the fray and offer their own flavors of this new technology. Connecting to the websites that host these apps will connect you to powerful computers that can render a response that is becoming more believable every day. Type in a few keywords and some prompts about what you are looking, asking for expansion or summarizing of a topic, and for and how long the article will be and you wonder if you could have used this as a student to write reports. AI can even write poetry, create recipes, create videos and more amazing things,
These computers and been connected to millions of books, articles and other sources of information so that when queried, they can provide an immediate response that might take you hours to produce. My comments on the topic is essentially outdated by the time it reaches you as this environment is changing/improving at a such a rapid pace.
Some major tech leaders such as Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and others have voiced their concerns about safety of what is produce as it is feared the algorithms that compose the responses could create very believable misinformation or fake news. With these fears in mind Musk, Wozniak, other tech innovators have signed an open letter to the creators of these AI systems so that a group of independent overseers can assure that the effects will be positive and the risks manageable. “The letter warns that at this stage, no one can understand, predict, or reliably control” the powerful new tools developed in AI labs. The undersigned tech experts cite the risks of propaganda and lies spread through AI-generated articles that look real, and even the possibility that AI programs can outperform workers and make jobs obsolete”. They go further to suggest to build in assurances of safety protocols and that development is audited and overseen by outside experts.
