Evernote: Home Page Features
If you do not have Evernote, a leader in notetaking apps, go to www.evernote.com and down load the free version. It runs on Macs, PCs, Android and IOS. Find many videos on setup and how to use it on YouTube or the Evernote.com website. You can send email to it, create your own notes, drag/drop files into it, make audio files, attach pictures, share notes, and so on. One of the best tools is the WebClipper used to capture webpages and send them directly to your Evernote account. Give it a try. With Scannable, you can scan documents on the fly and save them to Evernote.
Evernote, under the leadership of Ian Small, continues to make progress with enhancements to speed of loading , security, and new features. This article will focus on the Home Page and the attached Widgets.
To get to Home, just click on the Home icon in the side bar. You will be presented with several boxes with useful information. The ellipsis in the top right corner of the box offers additional settings or removal of the widget.
In the upper corner of the Home Page, click on Customize to select additional items that are available currently or edit the appearance of the ones you are using. You can also change the Background photo if you have the Background switch enabled by choosing one that is offered or uploading your own image. Hover over the lower right corner of a Widget to adjust the size. If Customize is open, an orange dot will appear in the lower right corner to show that it is already in use in Home. In Customize, you can drag the widgets around to place them where you desire. You can change the name of a widget to add more than one session of it such as two Scratch Pads or two Pinned Notes. You can have up to 12 widgets.
Some widgets have left/right arrows to go forward or back as in the calendar. If you select a widget and want to go back where you were, use the left/right arrows in the Sidebar to navigate.
Widget examples are:
Notes: click on the > to go to all your notes. Select Recent to display ones that have been opened recently. Click Suggested to see what Evernote offers.
Calendar: click on the > to go to a larger view of your Google Calendar which integrates with Evernote.
Pinned Note: Keep a note on the home page that you refer to frequently. Within a note, go to the top right corner and click on the ellipsis to see the options available. You will see a choice, Pin To Home. Choose that to put the note in Home Page.
Recently Captured: Here are items that were added to your account recently. You can view: Web Clips, Images (notes that include images), Documents, Audio and Emails.
Recents: Notes that have been edited or added recently.
Shortcuts: these can be displayed in Home rather than the Sidebar if you prefer.
Scratch Pad: a place to quickly jot down a thought. Intended for short notes, limited in size and number of what you can put there. Click the ellipsis to convert these jottings to a note. Click on the pencil to change the name or color of the Scratch Pad. Remember, as an alternative, you can add the Elephant Head icon to your Task Bar which brings up a small dialog box to write items that will quickly go to your inbox in Evernote. You can use the keyboard command CNTL+CMD+N to invoke this feature. If you used the option to clear the scratch pad, don’t worry, what you cleared has been sent to the Evernote trash and you can recover that million dollar idea you accidently deleted.
My Tasks: list what you need to accomplish if you are using the new Task Feature in Evernote.
Filtered Notes: set up a filter to see certain notes based on search criteria
Notebooks: list of your notebooks to help with quick navigation. Includes options for Recent and Suggested.
Tags: a list of the tags that you are using along with a count of the number of notes in which they appear.
